In-House Laboratory

We have invested heavily in a top-spec range of in-house analysers allowing us to obtain speedy results for your pet.  The faster we can make a diagnosis, the sooner we can start treatment and initiate treatment, minimising waiting time and the chances of your pet’s condition deteriorating.  Outlined below are details of each machine in our in-house suite and what it will allow us to measure.

Abaxis HM5 - Full Haematology

These tests allow us to measure the levels of the different types of cells in your pet’s blood.  This is very important as it can indicate particular disease processes, for example, low levels of red blood cells indicate anaemia and high levels of white blood cells indicate inflammation or infection.

Abaxis VS2 - Comprehensive Biochemistry

These wide ranging tests allow us to measure many different compounds in the blood, giving us information as to what is happening with your pet’s organs.  For example, we measure 3 liver enzymes which can become raised if there is any liver damage and 3 compounds that can become increased if there is kidney damage

Bionote V Check V200 - Point of Care Analyser

This incredible piece of kit will allow us to measure various compounds in-house that, previously, would have been sent out to an external laboratory.  Tests include:  cortisol (a hormone of metabolism that is increased in a condition called Cushings and decreased in a condition called Addisons), Progesterone (a female reproductive hormone, often used to determine optimal time for successful mating), NT pro-BNP (a compound that increases if there is damage to the heart muscle), Canine and Feline Pancreatic Lipase (enzymes that are increased in the very common condition, pancreatitis, C-reactive protein and Serum Amyloid A (acute phase proteins providing real-time, accurate information about inflammation), D-dimer (indicates blood clotting problems) and Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone and Thyroxine (hormones that measure the function of the thyroid gland).

Insight MS Urinalysis System

This machine measures various parameters within your pet’s urine including colour, microscopy, specific gravity (quantifies the concentration of the urine), glucose, protein, bilirubin and bile pigments, pH and ketones.  Assessing these factors together allows us to diagnose conditions such as bacterial urinary tract infections, diabetes and kidney disease earlier.

Insight qLabs Veterinary Coagulation Analyser

This machine rapidly measures PT and aPTT, two key indicators of the blood clotting process – they are extremely useful if we suspect a clotting disorder or as a precautionary pre-operative screen.

Woodley gPet Glucose Monitoring System

A quick and accurate patient-side monitor used to measure blood glucose – this can be vital in an emergency situation or for accurate diabetic monitoring.
