Neutering our pets is important for many reasons; prevention of pregnancy in females, prevention of behaviour associated with testosterone and sexual urges like aggression and roaming in males; prevention of diseases associated with the reproductive system like pyometritis, and mammary carcinomas in bitches as well as prostatic disorders and testicular cancers dogs. There are some situations in which we would advise either delaying neutering or not going ahead with it at all. We will be more than happy to have a discussion with you about the pros and cons of either option in light of your individual situation. Just ask.
Prior to routine elective procedures we recommend intravenous fluids for your pet before, during and after surgery. Fluid therapy is very important to support your pet’s body through an anaesthetic and will help them to wake up smoothly improving their recovery. It is one of the many tools we use to minimise risks and complications.
We also strongly recommend testing our canine patients for lungworm particularly if they are not on routine regular lung worm preventative treatment. Lungworm is endemic in the South East and can be transferred via slugs and snails as well as foxes. It is a condition that can lead to clotting disorders and sadly even proves fatal.
You will also have the option to add on some other items. At your admission appointment, we will talk through each one of these options and let you know what we advise.
A pre-op blood test – a condensed version of our full blood rest to focus on the parameters that will allow us to assess whether or not it is safe to go ahead with your pets anaesthetic – £50.
A special bland food to feed your pets for their new couple of meals to prevent an upset tummy following their anaesthetic.
A buster collar – preventing licking is of vital importance following an operation. The need for a collar will depend on the individual pet and situation so we will advise you on this. We will also be stocking a range of more premium lick prevention products such as recovery shirts, inflatable collars + novelty collars in our shop in reception which we can show you.
If you have any further questions give us a ring and we will happily answer them.
